Being able to move large amounts of data/files over 1 Gbps connection would be as close to actual teleportation we could have for the foreseeable future. As more and more of the things we produce are digital, being able to move these things around the world in almost instantaneously becomes increasingly valuable. 15 years ago how much would it cost to send Gigabytes of data across the country or world (probably stored on tapes or multiple hard drives. Hundreds if not thousands depending on how fast you needed. it. Over 1 Gbps connection you can send a 1GB file in about 8 seconds. Hours of uncompressed video could be sent from one end of the world to the other in a couple of minutes. That's like something out of science fiction just a few of decades ago.
The question is can this experiment grow outside of a small city in be expanded nationwide? What will companies like Time Warner or Comcast do to compete? What effects would nationwide fiber have on the U.S. economy?
